St Brendan is one of the most significant Saints of early Irish Christianity . His name is connected with the foundation of monastic settlements from Ardfert, Inishdadroum , Annaghdown, Clonfert and Seana Cill at the foot of Mount Brandon .

The Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abbatis is believed to have been one of the most commonly read books in Europe in the Middle ages and is believed to have influenced and inspired many of the explorers who went out to discover the New World. St Brendan has been admired throughout the ages for his faith, bravery and spirit of exploration . His account portrays a compassionate and gregarious leader not preoccupied by any personnel wealth but with a vision and purpose that overcame the most insurmountable of obstacles for the benefit of others.

Can his story serve as an example to ourselves and our elected leaders as we tackle adversity in our own lives today ?
